Failed Atonement

1223810056p2o100

Because rain sometimes falls

heavy and swift

on parched land long-since abandoned

dry creek-beds protest

in angry torrents of regret

Rushing waters scrape away

traces of once lush valleys

Because the sun sometimes radiates

too hot and bright

on frozen fields stuck in endless Winter

tender vegetation fails to sprout

in cold tombs buried deep beneath

Waves of punishing heat create

barren landscapes

Because a mea culpa is whispered

soft and delinquent

from lips framed in delayed recognition

Hardened hearts deflect

in a last stand of self-preservation

Apologies, no matter how sincere,

simply arrive too late
